NOEL RAWSTHORNE started his Cathedral career as a chorister in Liverpool. After studying at the Royal Manchester College of Music with Harold Dawber, he continued his studies in organ-playing with Dr. Caleb Jarvis. In 1949, at the age of 19, he was appointed assistant organist to Dr. H. Goss Custard, organist of Liverpool Cathedral, under whom he served his ‘apprenticeship’ in the organ loft. In 1955 Noel Rasthorne was appointed organist of Liverpool cathedral in succession to Dr. Custard, who retired at the age of 85. Having been granted an award from the Gulbenkian Trust, by the Liverpool Bluecoat Society of Arts, he travelled to Siena, Italy. In 1958 to continue his studies with Fernando Germani, and to Paris in 1959 to study with Marcel Dupré.
