LIONEL DAKERS was born at Rochester, Kent, in 1924. He was a pupil, at York Minster, of Sir Edward Bairstow and after five years' service in the Army during the last war, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was Assistant Organist of St. Georges's Chapel, Windsor Castle, from 1950 to 1954 and subsequently became Organist of ripon Cathedral until his appointment to Exeter Cathedral in 1957. In addition to his main work as Organist ans Master of the Choristers at the Cathedral, he conducts the Exeter Musical Society and Exeter Chamber Orchestra. He delights in travel, either for making music or for pleasure and in this capacity he has visited much of the African continent and also the United States; he is also a devoted Francophile. In his spare moments of recreation, he is an ardent book collector, specialising in modern first editions.
