ROBERT JOYCE was born at Tynemouth, Northumberland in 1927. At the age of 16 he won an Organ Scholarship to the Royal College of Music, and was a  pupil of Sir William Harris and dr. Harold Darke. Two years later he became Organ Scholar at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, studying with Boris Ord. He returned to the Royal College of Music in 1949 to study composition with Gordon Jacob and conducting with Richard Austin. In 1950 he became Organist and Choirmaster at St. Matthew's Church, Northampton,  and conductor of the Northampton Bach Choir and Northampton Symphony Orchestra. He was appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers at Llandaff Cathedral in 1958, and is organ tutor to University College, Cardiff, and at Cardiff College of Music and Drama. He us also conductor of Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society, and has given first performances of commissioned works by the leading Welsh composers Alun Hoddinott, Daniel Jones, William Mathias and Arwel Hughes at the annual Llandaff Festival in June.
