MELVILLE COOK (b. Gloucester 1912) as a choirboy at Gloucester Cathedral came under the influence of Sir Herbert Brewer. He remained at the Cathedral as an articted pupil after his voice had broken. He was tutored by Dr. Herbert Samsion (who was appointed Organist in 1928) and remained as his assistant, gaining valuable esperience as accompanist and departy-conductor to the Three Choirs Festival. Melville Cook gained both diplomas of the Royal College of Organist in 1931, winning the Harding Prize For F.R.C.O.. He completed the B. Mus. degree at Durham in 1934 and took his Doctorate there in 1940 after a period of study with Sir Edward Bairstow. In 1937 Dr. Cook left Cheltenham where he had been appoined Organist and Choirmaster for Leeds Parish Church. During the War he served at home and abroad in the Royal Artillery. In 1956 he was appointed Organist ans Master of the Choristers at Hereford Cathedral, thos reiming his connection with the Three Choirs Festival after a break of nineteen years. He was responsible for the direction of the Hereford Festival in 1958, 1961 and 1964. He is now resident in Winnipeg, Canada, where he is conductor of the Philharmonic Society and Organist of All Saints' Church.
